I don’t like this piece. Overtime I watched as works appeared in line along the wall. It seemed as if there was some organisation behind it. However, by the time I got around to doing my piece I wasn’t left with a good space to work with. That aside, it has a nice anecdote to go along with it:
I wasn’t tall enough to paint the top of the arrow. In fact unless you’re about 7 feet tall you won’t be either.
So I decided to return the following night with a ladder. As I came out of the shadows I was approached by a guy trying to shot me weed. When he saw me lean up the ladder to climb onto the roof he was a bit startled. “Where you going?” he asked.
Once on the roof I realised I was too high to reach back down for the ladder. Luckily the weed shotter was standing below. “Could you pass me the ladder?” I asked whilst trying to reach for it.
He was quite out of his mind and my request confused him. Still reaching out I gently demanded it. At this point a man in a first floor flat across the road leaned out of his window. “Hey man! Hey, what you doing?” he shouted at me.
Getting passed a ladder up onto a roof by a man off his face in the middle of the night doesn’t look so good.
I grabbed the ladder and whilst walking across the roof, responded “I’m painting this.” The man across the road seemed satisfied by this answer and didn’t bother me anymore. Quick ladder set up. Paint arrow. Back down off roof.
The weed shotter was still hanging around. “You came out too early man, you came out too early.” The guy was right. I wouldn’t normally paint at this time but I was impatient to complete the piece after running on a few consecutive nights of 3 hours of sleep. “That’s right, back into the shadows you go. Back to the safety of the shadows,” he called after me as I slipped into a dark alleyway.
I liked that guy.
Thank you whoever you are.
